THE PICKY EATING UPDATE

πŸ“… Date: Friday, 14 August 2026 πŸ•— Time: 12:00 UK | 13:00 SAST πŸ“ Location: Zoom Webinar

A Pediatric Feeding Masterclass for Clinicians

This webinar is formally accredited for CPD purposes. A certificate of attendance will be issued to all professionals who attend the live session. Subject to approval.

Join us for the Parent Sense Lunch & Learn, our monthly webinar series for professionals, as we explore a variety of topics to transform the way we support babies, toddlers and the families who care for them.

“My child just won’t eat” is one of the most common presentations in any paediatric practice, and the challenge lies not only in understanding why but also the management. Picky eating is often treated as a phase to wait out, when in fact it can be the visible symptom of something else entirely: undiagnosed reflux, eosinophilic esophagitis, constipation or a non-IgE food allergy that never showed up on a blood test.

Our expert panel will help you look upstream. We’ll unpack the organic and physiological causes most often hiding behind a “picky eater” label, and explore what’s left to address once those causes have genuinely been ruled out.

What You’ll Learn
  • Why picky eating should be treated as a presenting symptom, not a standalone diagnosis
  • The organic and GI red flags every clinician should screen for: reflux, eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE), constipation and non-IgE cow’s milk protein allergy
  • Why EOE is so frequently missed or misdiagnosed, and what the referral and diagnostic pathway actually looks like
  • The overlap between sensory processing, autism and feeding difficulties, including how often GI issues sit underneath
  • How to distinguish developmental picky eating from a genuine feeding difficulty that needs clinical attention
  • What to do once medical causes are ruled out: repairing feeding dynamics and rebuilding trust between parent and child

Β

Practical Application

You’ll walk away with:

  • Updated clinical framework – a structured way of thinking through organic causes before defaulting to a behavioural explanation
  • Diagnostic confidence – a clearer sense of when to investigate, when to reassure, and when to refer
  • Family communication tools – practical language for explaining reflux, EOE, constipation and allergy to caregivers without causing unnecessary alarm
  • Red flag recognition – a refreshed checklist of the GI and feeding signs that warrant further investigation
  • Multidisciplinary perspective – an understanding of when and how to loop in the wider team on complex feeding cases

MEET YOUR SPEAKERS
Kath Megaw

Leading paediatric dietitian and co-author of Weaning Sense and Allergy Sense, with clinical experience spanning gastroenterology, neurology and neonatal ICU. Kath will unpack constipation, abdominal pain and the non-IgE cow’s milk protein allergy link to EOE, and why these are so often dismissed in practice.

Natalia Stasenko

Paediatric dietitian, lecturer at Columbia University, author and picky eating specialist. Natalia will open the session with a broad look at what drives feeding difficulties, then return at the end to unpack how to repair feeding dynamics once organic causes have been ruled out.

Lucy Jackman

Registered dietitian with a special interest in paediatric gastroenterology and gut health, leading motility and complex GI allergy services at a world-renowned NHS children’s hospital. Lucy will unpack eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) and reflux, and why time to diagnosis is still far too long.

If you work with infants and toddlers in any clinical or allied health capacity, this session will sharpen your ability to spot the organic causes behind picky eating, and give you tools you can use in your very next consultation.
